Electoral Court Orders ECN to Disclose Key Election Data

ECN

The Electoral Court has directed the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to provide crucial election-related information to the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) and the Landless People’s Movement (LPM). The court ruling comes amid calls for transparency in the country’s electoral processes.

The IPC has rejected the recently concluded 2024 election results, in which SWAPO candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah emerged victorious, alleging that the process was neither free nor fair and accusing the ECN of irregularities.
The ECN has been instructed to produce detailed voting data on December 18 and 19, including the total number of votes cast, the number of rejected and spoilt ballots, and the number of voters who voted outside their constituencies.
In adherence to an agreement reached by all parties, the court emphasized that sealed documents and other election materials under seal will remain unopened. This decision aims to safeguard the integrity of sensitive election materials while allowing access to non-confidential information.
The court’s order follows collaboration between legal representatives of the applicants and the state, who had submitted a draft order for approval. The court endorsed the draft after making minor adjustments to its provisions.
The disclosure of this information is expected to shed light on aspects of the election process and address concerns raised by the IPC and LPM.
