Namibia and China Strengthen Diplomatic Ties with Visa Exemption Agreement

In a significant move to enhance diplomatic relations, the Namibian government has approved a mutual visa exemption agreement with China for holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports. The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon by deputy minister of information and communication technology, Modestus Amutse.

“Cabinet authorised the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security to enter into a mutual exemption from visa requirements between Namibia and China for holders of diplomatic, official [and] service passports,” Amutse stated.

The initiative is believed to have originated in March 2023, following a visit by a three-member Namibian delegation to Beijing. Reports suggest that the trip was sponsored by the Chinese government, underlining China’s strategic interest in strengthening its relationship with Namibia. However, the details of the negotiations were reportedly kept confidential by senior officials in Namibia’s immigration ministry.
