Six Minors Hospitalized After Allegedly Consuming Deadly Mushroom

Death Cap

Ndiyona Constituency, Kavango East
– Six minors aged between six and nine from Kashira village were rushed to Nyangana District Hospital on Friday after allegedly consuming a poisonous mushroom known as the death cap while playing in nearby bushes.

According to Kavango East regional crime investigations coordinator, Bonifatius Kanyetu, the affected children come from different households. After returning home, they reportedly began vomiting and showed signs of extreme weakness.

“A piece of a death cap was then recovered among them, which was handed to the medical staff to assist in treatment,” Kanyetu stated.

Medical staff at the hospital confirmed that the minors are currently in stable condition.

The death cap (Amanita phalloides) is one of the most poisonous mushrooms in the world. It contains potent toxins that can cause severe liver and kidney damage, and even death if ingested. The mushroom closely resembles edible species, making it especially dangerous for foragers and children unfamiliar with its deadly properties.

Authorities are urging parents and community members to educate children about the dangers of consuming wild plants and mushrooms.
