Two children have tragically died following a suspected case of food poisoning in Sarukwe village, Kavango West Region. The incident occurred on Thursday and involved six members of the same household.
According to NamPol’s Regional Commander, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo, the affected family reportedly consumed fresh beans and maize meal pap sourced from the government’s drought relief program. Shortly after, they began showing signs of severe illness and were rushed to Rundu State Hospital.
Two of the children succumbed to the illness, while their father and another child remain in critical condition. The remaining two individuals are receiving medical treatment and are under close observation.
Since the beginning of 2025, there has been a troubling series of food poisoning and toxicity cases reported almost every month.
Local communities and leaders are now calling for urgent public health education in the region to prevent further incidents in the future.
